Holding Care, Even When the World Feels Heavy

The past weeks have felt heavy. Across the country — and especially in Minneapolis — recent events have stirred grief, fear, rage and deep concern. Alex Peretti, Renee Nicole Good, Keith Porter Jr., and the names that didn't make it to mainstream media, whose lives deserve to be acknowledged as more than moments in the news. We’ve also been holding the story of Liam Conejo Ramos, a 5-year-old whose experience has deeply moved many — a reminder of how tender and vulnerable life is, especially for our children.

When the world feels like this, it’s normal to feel unsettled, distracted, or emotionally tired. Nothing is “wrong” with you for feeling the weight of it.

At Indigo Movement, we believe care begins by tending to the nervous system. Here are a few gentle reminders for this moment:

Pause and breathe slowly.
When stress rises, the body often shifts into alert mode. Try slowing your breath, especially the exhale — a longer exhale tells your nervous system that it’s safe to soften, even briefly.

Ground into your body.
Gentle movement, stretching, holding something warm, or placing a hand on your chest or belly can help bring you out of your head and back into the present moment.

Be intentional with news consumption.
Staying informed matters, but constant exposure can overwhelm the nervous system. Consider setting boundaries — specific times to check updates — and giving yourself permission to step away.

Reach for connection.
You don’t have to carry everything alone. A conversation with a trusted person, even without solutions, can be deeply regulating. Being seen and heard matters.

Create small rituals of calm.
Simple, repeated practices — making tea, journaling a few lines, lighting a candle, watching Abbot Kinney or crying — help signal steadiness and care, especially during uncertain times.

Healing doesn’t mean ignoring what’s happening. It means staying present  in your current truths, creating space to honor those truths, and bring our systems to neutral.

Staying regulated isn’t checking out. It’s choosing to stay functional, present, and responsible for your impact.

Cheers, Indigo Movement
