Father’s Day may have passed, but the reflections linger

Last weekend was Father’s Day—but the gratitude I feel lingers far beyond a single day.

My father was an immigrant who left the Philippines in the 1970s with nothing but grit, hope, and the dream of something more. He went to New York City—wide-eyed, determined, and ready to build a life from the ground up.

Eventually, he and my mother made their way to Seattle, where my siblings and I were born. We were raised on Beacon Hill in a home built on quiet sacrifice, strong values, and deep love. His journey wasn’t easy, but it paved the way for mine.

As I reflect on his legacy, I can’t help but think of the families today navigating their own immigration stories—facing unimaginable challenges while holding onto the same hope my father once did.

This tribute is for him, and for every father who’s ever left home so their children could have one.

We are here because of you.
We honor you.
And we continue to fight for the dignity of all who follow in your footsteps.

Best,
James
