A Love Letter to Lady T: Honoring the Woman Who Shaped Me
At Indigo Movement, we believe in celebrating the women who shaped us—those still with us and those whose presence we feel beyond this realm. Before we end this month, I want to shine a special light on Lady T, lovingly known as Terry Duncan, my momma.
My mother is the kind of woman whose strength is inherited, whose wisdom is ancestral, and whose love moves through generations. A magical matriarch with roots that run deep, she raised my brother Mikey and me to move through the world with pride, power, and presence.
She taught us to challenge societal norms around gender, race, and class—and to never forget where we came from. Always reminding my brother and me to be kind and to take no shit! She also pushed us to be the best at whatever we decided to do and the power of being multifaceted.
We carry our mothers with us in spirit, in song, and in the stories we share. One of my favorite memories? Cruising through Seattle mornings in a baby blue Dodge Dart—windows down, gospel playing, love in the air!
Here’s to my momma: a woman of agility, joy, community devotion, and unstoppable resilience. May we all honor the women who remind us we’re allowed to be strong and soft, grounded and wild, kind and unapologetically bold.
Cheers,
Tiana
